Environmental Policy

Purpose

HUB aims to reduce the environmental impact of how we operate and how we deliver digital services for our clients. As a small digital agency, much of our environmental impact comes through the suppliers we use rather than infrastructure we own ourselves. This includes hosting and cloud providers such as WP Engine, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and Google Cloud. Our approach is to make practical, informed choices and review them regularly.

Our Commitments

HUB will:

  • Consider environmental impact when selecting hosting, cloud, and other major technology suppliers.
  • Prefer suppliers with clear environmental policies, measurable carbon-reduction targets, and transparent reporting.
  • Review the environmental commitments of our main hosting suppliers each year.
  • Reduce unnecessary use of computing, storage, data transfer, and hosting resources.
  • Consider hosting location and energy use when this information is available and when it is practical to do so.
  • Avoid making environmental claims that we cannot support with evidence.

Hosting and Cloud Suppliers

Our main hosting and infrastructure suppliers currently include:

  • WP Engine
  • Amazon Web Services
  • Google Cloud

We recognise that managed hosting providers may also rely on infrastructure supplied by other cloud providers.

For each main supplier, we will keep a simple record of:

  • Their published environmental or sustainability policy.
  • Their carbon or net-zero targets.
  • Their approach to renewable or carbon-free energy.
  • Any environmental reporting available to customers.
  • The date we last reviewed this information.

We will use this information when reviewing existing suppliers and considering new ones.

Reducing Our Digital Impact

As part of our day-to-day work, we will aim to:

  • Remove unused hosting environments and cloud resources.
  • Avoid unnecessary data storage and backups.
  • Optimise websites and digital assets to reduce data transfer.
  • Use caching and content delivery appropriately.
  • Select suitable hosting regions where environmental information is available.
  • Consider environmental impact alongside cost, performance, security, and reliability.

Working With Clients

Where HUB recommends or manages hosting for a client, we will take environmental performance into account alongside the client’s technical and commercial requirements. Where appropriate, we will explain relevant environmental differences between hosting options.

Review

We will review this policy and the environmental commitments of our main hosting suppliers once a year.

Over the last few weeks, I have used a headshot I have had generated by AI as my LinkedIn avatar. I have received several comments, the most pertinent being, ‘Is that you Mike?’. Clearly not.
